Reserve Police Officer Unit The Milwaukie Police Department sponsors a reserve police officer program. The Reserve Police Unit is comprised of volunteer officers that donate their time to assist the police department.
Although a Reserve Police Officer is a non-paid position, each is a state certified, sworn reserve police officer empowered with the authority to make arrests and investigate crimes. Reserve Police Officers must meet similar hiring criteria as those required for our regular police officers.
Reserves must pass strict background and psychological testing. They must pass oral board interviews, physical agility courses, and medical testing. Reserves attend and must pass a reserve police academy before being authorized to assist full-time police personnel. In addition, each must pass a field training and evaluation process, coached by a regular officer.
Update and refresher training continues throughout the Reserve Officer tenure, as it does for all police officers within our department. Reserves work with full-time regular officers, often assisting as additional cover for high-risk calls, and transporting prisoners.
Having additional help from reserve officers during a work shift enables full-time officers to provide other services and activities needed in the City of Milwaukie. Reserve Unit members also assist with community events such as Milwaukie Festival Days Parade, perform court bailiff duties, provide security at crime scenes, patrolling at high school sporting events, and to a lesser extent, perform minor investigations.
Police Reserves often have to testify in court as a result of their duties. Many Reserve Police Officers use this volunteer position as on-the-job work experience prior to testing for a full-time police career. At least half the regular patrol officers had previous experience as a reserve police officer before choosing police work as their full-time careers.
The Milwaukie Police Reserve Unit dedicates itself to providing the highest level of professional service to the City of Milwaukie and the community. The Reserve Police Unit has earned respect through its selfless commitment to the police department and the City of Milwaukie.
Those interested in applying to become a reserve police officer can pick up an application form either through Milwaukie City Hall, which is located at 10722 SE Main Street, Milwaukie, Oregon 97222 or via the website in the job opportunities section.
