The City of Milwaukie is assisting downtown businesses, property owners, and
interested residents to initiate a “Main Street” program (with help from the
Clackamas County
Main Street Program and the State of Oregon).
With support from Clackamas County, Marketek, Inc., has prepared a market
analysis of downtown Milwaukie, incorporating responses from shoppers and
downtown businesses. The report can be downloaded
here.
The Main Street approach
was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Main Street
groups organize their work around four areas, or “committees.”
Organization Committee (meets once or twice a month, usually at Cha Cha
Cha).
The Organization Committee is currently developing a work plan, focused in five
areas:
Design Committee(meets 2 p.m. at City Hall on the first Tuesday of
the month).
The Design Committee is dedicated to improving the physical appearance of
downtown and has completed a draft work plan. Click for a
committee job
description.
Economic Vitality (meets 4:30 p.m. at City Hall on the second Tuesday of
the month). Committee focuses on identifying and supporting business opportunities. See,
for instance, the market analysis report described above. Click for a
committee
job description.
Promotions (meeting monthly, time/place TBA). Devoted to promoting the downtown and related businesses. Click for a
committee job description.
The Chairs of the various committees meet monthly (the third Wednesday
of the month, 5:30 PM at the Ledding Library Pond House, 2816 Harrison Street).
The chief purpose of this meeting is to make sure the various committee
activities support and complement each other.
