Milwaukie Neighborhood Association leaders and the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) representatives banded together to replace and update school crossing guard equipment for three Milwaukie elementary schools that use guards at crosswalks – Ardenwald, Linwood and Milwaukie Elementary. Funded by the City’s Walk Safely Milwaukie Program, each Neighborhood donated a portion of their Awareness and Education budget. Total cost was about $1,400.
The project was initiated by Ray Bryan, a Historic Milwaukie NDA officer and PSAC representative, after he observed crossing guards at Milwaukie elementary doing their jobs without up-to-date equipment. Linda Hedges, a PSAC member-at-large, researched the costs, wrote the grant request application and communicated with NDA leaders to seek their approval. City Engineer Jason Rice sourced all the materials and advised throughout the project to make sure all the desired and required equipment was provided.
Equipment included high visibility vests and rain jackets, baseball caps, STOP paddles, whistles and flashlights.
The equipment was provided Elementary School Principals Terri Cook, Molly Little and Karon Webster in January.
