City Council interested in your thoughts on plastic bag ban

Wed Dec 7th, 2011

Members of Milwaukie Understands Sustainable Transitions, or MUST, is looking at ways to reduce the use of plastic bags in the community – including a ban that’s similar to the one that’s in place on large retailers in Portland.

Members of MUST, and City Council, want to know what the larger community thinks about such a proposal, or if there are other ideas that will phase out plastic bags. MUST member Vince Alvarez suggests the reasons aren’t just environmental, but economic as well. According to Waste Management officials’ testimony before Portland City Council, “bags in the waste stream cost local handlers between $30,000 to $40,000 a month.“ Click here for more information. MUST leaders point to efforts around the globe as examples of success. Click here for a list of other ban actions.

If you have opinions on the effort, please contact City Council at citycouncil@ci.milwaukie.or.us.
